Sundae Shoppe Chocolate Hazelnut & Vanilla Rose Cones

Aldi has upped its ice cream cone game during the last few years. We’ve seen whimsical galactic and unicorn cones, mermaid cones, snowflake cones, and strawberry and cream rose cones. This summer, Aldi brought the strawberry and cream rose cones back to stores alongside a new flavor: chocolate hazelnut & vanilla. We picked up a box to try.

Sundae Shoppe Chocolate Hazelnut & Vanilla Rose Cones cost $3.99 at the time of publication for a 17.6-ounce box that contains four 4.4-ounce cones. That comes out to about $1 per cone. You’re paying for artistic presentation, as well as for custom plastic and foil packaging that protects the cones from breakage during shipping.

The box describes these as “chocolate hazelnut & vanilla flavored ice desserts in a wafer cone.”

These are an Aldi Find, which means they’re only in stores for a short time. Aldi gets one shipment, and once they sell out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back later. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that aren’t in stock at your local store.

These cones are made in Slovenia by the novelty ice cream and frozen dessert maker Leone. This company supplies private label products not just to Aldi but also to retailers including Tesco, Morrisons, and Aldi competitor Lidl. Any time my family sees ice cream or frozen desserts at Aldi that were produced in Slovenia, we know they were likely made by Leone. Besides cones, Aldi has also sold reindeer, snowman, and Christmas tree ice cream pops during the winter holidays.

These cones are as pretty as I expected them to be, considering their source. They feature vanilla ice cream on top, swirled into a rose-like design and sprinkled with pink sparling sugar crystals. The inside of the cone is filled with chocolate hazelnut ice cream, and the bottom tip of the cone has a chocolate hazelnut sauce and a bit of hard chocolate. Unlike some of the other cones from Leone that are lined entirely with chocolate on the inside, this cone only contains hard chocolate in the bottom.

My family readily ate these up on a warm summer afternoon. The combination of vanilla and chocolate is just right, and the mild hazelnut flavor in the chocolate adds a nice twist. If you want a sophisticated and fancy-looking dessert that tastes great, you can’t go wrong with these cones.

The Verdict:

Sundae Shoppe Chocolate Hazelnut & Vanilla Rose Cones are the latest in a long line of novelty dessert cones Aldi has sold from the European ice cream maker Leone. We like everything Leone makes, and these chocolate, hazelnut, and vanilla rose cones are as good as we expected. These are worth trying if you like ice cream.

  1. Sophisticated and fancy looking it is. And the hazelnut flavor is exquisite and authentic, unlike the unpleasant disappointing tastes one often encounters in (so-called) hazelnut-flavored coffee products and coffee creamers.

  2. It looks good but looks can be deceiving there’s an ingredient that should not be in this product Maltodextrin- so I don’t know why it’s in here? Especially if it’s coming from Europe?! Really ALDI?!
