EDITOR’S NOTE: Updated to reflect that these are a Seasonal Item at Aldi.
Aldi has a small health section that includes pain relievers, allergy medications, fish oil, heartburn relief, laxatives, cotton swabs, and gummy vitamins for children and adults. These are all sold under the Welby brand, which is not a separate company. Instead, Welby is the private label Aldi uses for its health-related products.
I recently tried the gummy vitamins at Aldi, but Aldi sells several different types of gummy supplements that also caught my attention. They also sell melatonin gummies, apple cider vinegar gummies, vitamin D gummies, and elderberry gummies all for adults. I picked up the elderberry gummies to try.
Elderberries may boost immune health and, according to Healthline, may help with cold and flu symptoms, although studies done to date have been small, and more definitive research is needed. You can take elderberry supplements in the form of syrups, pills, or gummies. Of course, gummies are popular because they’re sweet and taste good, and you don’t have to deal with swallowing pills. One downside to gummy supplements is that they usually contain added sugar and other extra ingredients.
Welby Elderberry Adult Gummies cost $6.89 at the time of publication for a bottle containing 60 gummies. Two gummies make one serving, which comes out to 30 servings per bottle, or about 11 cents per gummy or 23 cents per serving.
That’s a better deal than other elderberry gummies I found at both Amazon and Walmart. For example, a 50-count bottle of name-brand Airborne elderberry gummies from Walmart cost $13.24 or about 26 cents per gummy at the time of writing. One advantage to the Airborne gummies is that they contain a larger dose of elderberry extract per serving (300 mg). More on that momentarily.
For more comparison, a 60-count bottle of Equate Walmart-brand gummies cost $7.98 or about 13 cents per gummy at the time of writing, which is a better deal but still not as cheap as the Aldi gummies, and the Equate gummies contain less elderberry extract per serving than the Aldi gummies.
When I first bought these gummies at Aldi, they seemed to be a Regular Buy available at any time of year. However, the most recent signs I’ve seen in the store indicate that these are now a Seasonal Item. Aldi stocks Seasonal Items for longer than Aldi Finds, but they aren’t sold year round. Aldi seems to be stocking these elderberry gummies during the winter months, which makes sense because that’s the height of cold and flu season when people are looking for ways to boost their immune systems. Aldi does not offer online ordering if these are not in stock at your local store.
Here’s more information about the gummies, according to the bottle:
- Contains vitamin C and zinc
- Vegan
- No artificial colors
- Gluten free
I spotted a sticker on the case in store that stated these gummies are from a vendor called Vita Warehouse based in New York. These appear to be produced by VitaGlobe, a manufacturer of health and beauty products.
The instructions state to thoroughly chew two gummies per day as a dietary supplement.
Ingredients are: sucrose, maltose syrup (from corn), purified water, polydextrose, carrageenan, citrus pectin, sodium hexametophosphate, artificial blueberry flavor, carnauba wax and vegetable oil, trisodium citrate, and caramel color and turmeric.
If you’re looking out for allergens, these contain tree nuts (coconut).
These contain 20 calories per two-gummy serving, along with 5 grams of total carbohydrates (2% DV) and 5 grams of added sugars (10% DV). They contain 150 mg of vitamin C as ascorbic acid (167% DV), 10 mg of zinc as zinc gluconate (91% DV), 5 mg of sodium (<1% DV), and 150 mg of elderberry fruit extract 30:1 (Sambucus nigra L.).
Some sources recommend that if you take elderberry supplements, you should look for one that offers 300 mg of elderberry extract per serving. The Aldi gummies only contain 150 mg per serving.
The bottle advises to consult a doctor before using if you are pregnant and nursing, taking medications, or have a medical condition. Discontinue use and consult a doctor if you have any adverse reactions. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature between 59 degrees and 86 degrees.
As for how these gummies taste, they’re pretty good, with no strange vitamin-like aftertaste. They’re sweet and chewy and easy to get down. I’m not sure if I’ll buy them all the time because I’m uncertain how much of a difference they really make, but they’re not the worst thing to stock in your medicine cabinet or among your vitamins and other supplements. At the very least, you might feel good keeping them on hand during cold and flu season.
The Verdict:
Welby Elderberry Adult Gummies contain 150 of elderberry extract per serving, along with 150 mg of vitamin C and 10 mg of zinc. Elderberries may help boost the immune system, ward off colds or flu, or reduce severity of cold and flu symptoms, although more research is needed to know for certain. In the meantime, these taste good and are fun to take if you’re trying to give your immune system a leg up. Just be aware that they do contain added sugar.
Our Aldi’s in my town has not had these for about a month or two. I always bought them but can not find them.
They’re a Seasonal Item only available during the fall/winter months. You should be able to find them at Aldi now.
