Our Specialty Double Layer Carrot Cake

EDITOR’S NOTE: We originally reviewed this in 2022. We bought it and reviewed it again in 2025 and updated this review.

A few years ago, I purchased a carrot cake from Aldi upon the request of my youngest child, who likes carrot cake. I served it for dessert on Easter, alongside an array of other sweets and fruit.

The cake was a surprising hit. It’s one of the best cakes I’ve ever purchased at Aldi, and I’ve been buying it every Easter since then. The only store-bought cakes I can think of that I like equally well would be some limited-time German cream cakes Aldi sometimes sells, along with the vanilla and chocolate sheet cakes from Trader Joe’s, a cousin to Aldi.

Anyway, when the carrot layer cake showed up again in the weekly Aldi ad among the Easter goodies for 2025, I immediately added it to my shopping list.

Our Specialty Double Layer Carrot Cake

The Our Specialty Double Layer Carrot Cake cost $8.99 for a 32-ounce cake in April of 2025. This is up from $7.99 when we first wrote about it in 2022.

The carrot cake is an Aldi Find, so it’s only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, it’s gone until next year. Aldi does not offer online ordering for its specials if they’re not in stock at your local store.

Our Specialty is not an Aldi private label. It’s a brand produced by Rich’s, also known as Rich Products Corporation, a family-owned food company based in Buffalo, New York. Rich’s was founded in 1945 when Robert E. Rich Sr. created a long-lasting soybean-based cream as a replacement for dairy-based whipped cream. Today, the company sells pizza, beverages, and various desserts and baked goods.

(The Rich family also has a sweet tooth for the sporting world, going back to naming rights of its hometown Buffalo Bills’ stadium between 1973 and 1998. The family currently owns three minor league baseball teams, one of them in Buffalo, and is also involved with sponsorships in motorsports and English soccer.)

Where you find this cake at Aldi can vary depending on the store. Sometimes it’s in the Aldi Find freezer case, but you might also find it in the refrigerated aisle. Or, it might be on a shelf in the Aldi Find room-temperature food aisle or on an endcap near the checkout lanes.

If you buy it frozen, you’ll want to give it a few hours to thaw. My family has learned from experience that the frosting tends to fall off in chunks if you try to eat this cake before it’s fully defrosted (but some of us just can’t wait that long).

The package says “leftovers last longer refrigerated.” I typically store the cake in the fridge as soon as I get it home from the store so it stays fresh. If we’re not eating it within a few days, I freeze it. The cake I bought most recently had a best-by date of about four days out from the date of purchase.

This is a cake, so of course it’s loaded with calories and sugar. The first few ingredients are sugar, carrots, wheat flour, soybean oil, and cream cheese. It doesn’t contain raisins or nuts like many carrot cakes do, but it does have some crushed pineapple that adds a small to moderate amount of texture.

Gorgeous sliced carrot layer cake.

This cake is delicious, with moist spiced cake layers and a rich, thick frosting with an indulgent cream cheese flavor and just the right amount of sweetness without being overly sweet. With pretty carrot icing features, it also looks gorgeous on your Easter or springtime table. When you slice it, the layers are just as pretty.

Just buy this cake. Trust me. Maybe get an extra one to freeze for later, too. It will be a highlight of any springtime dessert spread, or it’s nice as a snack any time of day, especially when paired with a cup of tea or coffee.

The Verdict:

The Our Specialty Double Layer Carrot Cake is a great store-bought cake. Not only does it taste good, with moist cake and rich cream cheese frosting; it also looks gorgeous with its layers and iced carrots. This is worth trying at least one time. If you like carrot cake, you won’t be disappointed.

  1. I’m going to look for it today and eat dessert first! For those of us who don’t like nuts and raisins in their carrot cake, thanks, Aldi Reviewer!

      1. Went to two Aldi stores, the first was sold out, but the second one had two left! I just bought one (it was near the cheese in the refrigerated aisle) and a little while after getting it home, I tried a piece. You are so right, it is one of the best store bought cakes ever. (I had a small second piece!) Thanks again.

        1. You aren’t kidding. The ingredient lists are almost word for word.
I think you’ve figured out who makes Walmart’s cakes. I usually like them so it’s not a surprise.
Be nice to see a side by side taste test.

  2. Sorry, my husband who love carrot cake, gave it a C, no texture, pretty dry and just not much taste. Sorry, this is a pass in our house.

    1. That has not been our experience at all, and we’ve bought this cake for years. It’s always been moist and flavorful.

  3. Just picked one up this morning as they were being stocked. so it’s back for 2025! I never had it before but bought it on the recommendation of the Aldi employee and I’m glad I did, it’s moist and delicious! Price is up to $8.99.

    1. Hi, Melody. Glad you found one! I saw it in the ad for this week, but it hasn’t shown up at my local stores yet. Fingers crossed it comes in. It’s so good!

    1. Hi, Anna. Aldi has removed synthetic colors from its own house brands. Unfortunately, Our Specialty is not an Aldi-exclusive brand. Hence, the artificial colors. (My guess is that, with this cake, the artificial colors are only in the carrot and carrot top icing on the top of the cake, so you could always just remove those parts and not eat them.)

Anyway, you’ll encounter the same issue with synthetic colors with other name brands Aldi sells, like Doritos, Gatorade, etc. Here’s more information: https://www.aldireviewer.com/psa-aldi-products-are-free-of-artificial-colors-msg-and-hydrogenated-oils/

  4. I don’t know if Aldi will have this again soon, but Walmart’s Freshness Guaranteed now has SIGNIFICANTLY different ingredients than last years.

They also have a ‘Marketside’ carrot cake at the same store near me. That as has a different appearance and ingredient list.

Unfortunately, neither shows who makes them.

    1. I’ve been watching for this cake to show up at Aldi this year. It’s not among the advertised food Aldi Finds for the week of April 1st, 2026, which is the last ad cycle before Easter. I would think that if Aldi were going to sell it, they’d want to do so before Easter. I’m hoping it shows up as a surprise/unadvertised Aldi Find this coming week.
