Aldi Stocks Deutsche Küche Herring Fillets During German Week
This post is an open thread.
EDITOR’S NOTE: We first wrote about these in 2024. Aldi is selling what looks to be identical curry pineapple and tomato herring fillets the week of April 29th, 2026, for $1.99.
Sometimes during Aldi German week, you’ll find food that is unlike a lot of what you’d see in a typical American grocery store. There are the peanut puffs, for instance, or the jaffa cakes, or the pickle cheese schnupfnudeln.
One of the Aldi German products American shoppers might have the most questions about are the canned herring fillets. These are ready-to-eat tins of fish in sauce, and they come in a few varieties: herring fillets in curry pineapple sauce, herring fillets in tomato sauce, and herring fillets in mango pepper sauce. We’ve seen Aldi customers recommend eating these straight out of the can (they’re fully cooked), or serving them with crackers or hearty German bread, or some people say they serve these warm on top of cooked rice.
What We Know:

Deutsche Küche Herring Fillets are an Aldi Find. That means they’re only in stores for a short time. Each store gets one shipment, and they’re not restocked after they sell out. If they’re not currently on the shelves at your local store, you’ll have to wait until the next German week. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that are out of stock at your area store.
These cost $1.99 for a 7.05-ounce can in April of 2026. That’s up from $1.69 for a 7.05-ounce can in December of 2024.
These are a product of Germany. They are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. The herring (scientific name Clupea Harengus) were caught in FAO 27 in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean using the midwater trawl / purse seine catch method.

The labels state that although every effort was made to remove all bones, some may remain.
Keep reading for more information about each variety.

What We Don’t Know:
We haven’t yet gotten around to trying these, although we’ve tried a lot of other German foods at Aldi. Until we try these for ourselves, we’ve written this open thread in the meantime to give readers a place to talk about them.
Have you purchased Deutsche Küche Herring Fillets? What did you think of them? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

I was going to pick these up until I saw the sodium content. I felt like they might taste too salty to be enjoyable.
I’m hoping someone can comment on these as well.
I’ve seen some people on Facebook Aldi groups talk about the sodium content. They might be better enjoyed with rice, crackers, bread, etc. to help cut the salt flavor.
The Pineapple and the Mango ones are not salty. I have a very low sodium diet due to a stroke and if there’s even a hint of salt in some thing I can taste it. These two are very sweet it anything to the point they need to be served with rice or potatoes to cut the sweetness a bit. For the price and size these are a great deal and the fish meat is firm for a canned fish but still moist if that makes sense. I like them the a lot and only recently found them. Been buy the sardines at Aldi for awhile and I like these more.
I hoard these when they go on the shelves! Love them!!! (I hadn’t noticed them being particularly high in sodium, but will look again.) They are absolutely delicious. I don’t even eat them on anything… just give me a spoon, baby!!! Lol.
