EDITOR’S NOTE: We originally reviewed these in 2016. We bought and reviewed them again in 2025 and updated this post.

You can make a pretty mean breakfast using Aldi products, from their low-priced bacon and their eggs to their decent selection of heat-and-serve items. For those who don’t want to make French toast on their own, Aldi’s got that.

Breakfast Best French Toast Sticks are a Regular Buy. That means you should be able to find them at Aldi any time of year.

We buy Aldi products for review with our own funds. We paid $3.09 per 20-ounce box at our local Aldi in April of 2025. That’s around 15 cents per ounce. Each box contains about four 5-stick servings, which comes out to about 77 cents per serving or about 15 cents per stick.

These come in two varieties: original and double cinnamon. They cost the same and come packaged with the same number of sticks. The double cinnamon version has a cinnamon-sugar coating, which gives them a slightly sweeter taste (as well as makes them a bit more messy). The cinnamon sticks also have a higher sugar content than the original ones.

If you’re looking out for allergens, both varieties contain wheat, egg, soy, and milk.

One 5-stick serving of the original variety has 310 calories, 15 grams of total fat (19% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% DV), 340 mg of sodium (15% DV), 40 grams of total carbohydrates (15% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 11 grams of total sugars, 11 grams of added sugars (22% DV), and 5 grams of protein.

A 5-stick serving of the double cinnamon variety has 330 calories, 15 grams of total fat (19% DV), 2 grams of saturated fat (10% DV), 340 mg of sodium (15% DV), 44 grams of total carbohydrates (16% DV), 2 grams of dietary fiber (7% DV), 17 grams of total sugars, 17 grams of added sugars (34% DV), and 5 grams of protein.

These have a carbs-to-fiber ratio of 20:1 for the original variety and 22:1 for the double cinnamon variety. That’s not great, so we consider these to be an occasional breakfast treat in our household.

The French toast sticks can be cooked in the microwave or in the oven.

The microwave is the fastest, at 1 minute and 20 seconds. Simply place the stick in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high for about 1 minute and 20 seconds for five sticks.

The oven takes 8 minutes — 4 on each side — plus the time to preheat the oven to 400 degrees. To bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place the sticks in a single layer on a shallow baking sheet. Bake for about 4 minutes, turn sticks over, and bake an additional 4 minutes.

(Of note: Aldi has tweaked cooking instructions for these over the years. When we first wrote about them in 2016, the original variety also had skillet instructions, basically heating and turning the sticks continually in a skillet until they’re done. The oven instructions used to be slightly different, calling for cooking for 3 minutes on each side at 425 degrees.)

Which approach you take is up to you. We’ve tried it all and we recommend the oven, especially if you have a little time and you like your French toast crisp. If you don’t mind the sticks being on the floppy side or if you’re rushed, the microwave instructions are pretty simple.

So, are they good? Oh, yes. The taste and texture are both excellent, and they go well with syrup. But are they good for you? No. They’re fairly high in sodium, fat, and sugar, and they’re made with white flour. Aldi has tested some whole wheat varieties and protein varieties as Aldi Finds, but they, too, also remain high in the other categories.

The Verdict:

They won’t win any awards for nutrition, but the Breakfast Best French Toast Sticks taste great and are a cinch to make. They come in original and double cinnamon varieties. You can throw them in the microwave in a hurry, but we suggest baking them, especially if you’re out to create a top-quality home breakfast experience.

  1. I recommend the cinnamon variety. Like the review says, they are best when baked in an oven. I recommend five minutes on each side at 425 degrees. (They are just a little mushy at four minutes as the directions suggests.) When they come out, I spread on some butter and pour on maple syrup. Delicious! And a good value at $1.99 per box.

  2. I bought the original and, after heating 4 in a convention oven. The out side was soft but, upon biting into them, the middle was like dry toast. Not happy at all. Threw them out.

    1. I’m sure you could air fry them. You might need to experiment with cook time, and you’ll probably still want to flip them halfway through. Let us know how it goes if you try it!

  3. I bought the original and put them in the air fryer at 400° for about 6 minutes (we wanted them crispy!) They were delicious and of course nutritionally naughty but for an occasional treat!
