Sugar is an old weakness for humans. Archaeologists have found evidence of sugar cane domestication going back 6,000 years. By the time Europeans were sailing across the Atlantic 500 years ago, sugar had become a pricey spice for the wealthy, but with the surge in cultivation it became a mass-produced commodity. Today, sugar is cheap, and it’s not the only sweetener on the market, thanks to the development of alternatives like high fructose corn syrup.
Still, cane sugar has a market. It’s popular in some soft drinks, especially locally made ones. It’s also indispensable for many recipes from desserts to waffles. And, of course, people use sugar around the house to add to things like tea.
For those reasons, granulated sugar can be found at virtually any grocery store, to say nothing of many dollar stores and pharmacies. You would expect Aldi to carry it as well, and you would be right.
Baker’s Corner Premium Granulated Sugar is a staple Aldi Regular Buy, meaning you can find it in stores all the time. It comes in a simple four-pound paper bag in the store’s dry goods section. At post time, the bag costs $2.99. That comes out to around 75 cents a pound or around 4.7 cents an ounce. For comparison, Walmart’s Great Value Granulated Sugar currently is a little more expensive at $3.14, or 4.9 cents an ounce. Aldi’s reputation for competitive prices holds true here.
The nutrition information is as simple as it gets. Each 8-gram serving of sugar has 8 grams of sugar, and nothing else. The primary ingredient is, likewise, sugar.
Beyond that, the package doesn’t have much to say. There is a recipe for sugar cookies on one side, and if we ever feel like it, we might try the recipe out.
We’ve used this sugar for years, and it is exactly what we would expect from any grocery store. It’s sugar. That might sound obvious, but for people who nevertheless wonder how Aldi granulated sugar quality is, we can say that we can’t tell any difference from any other sugar brand. It’s our go-to sugar and will be as long as the price is competitive.
The Verdict:
Most sugar at grocery stores is about the same, which makes price all that more important. Aldi Baker’s Corner Premium Granulated Sugar checks all the boxes, delivering granulated sugar the way we would expect, and at as low a price as we can find. It’s been a staple in our pantry for years, and it’s an easy recommendation for those who need sugar.
I quit buying Aldi sugar because it was always very clumpy. No taste difference but a pain to get rid of the big and small clumps.
The images do not show it’s cane sugar which means it likely is beet sugar. My preference is cane sugar it does make a difference in baking, is less processed and although it doesn’t make a difference in my coffee it’s easier to just have one type of sugar in the cupboard. I love some of the Aldi products but still like other stores read the label
Price wise, no complaints, quality wise it has too much sugar powder in it…I like granulated not powdered sugar when I’m pouring my sugar…
Is Aldi’s sugar made from beets, or sugar cane? Famously, producers of cane sugar state so proudly and prominently on the front label.
