Open Thread: Welby Ear/Forehead or Noncontact Thermometer

EDITOR’S NOTE: Aldi sold these again in January of 2023 for the same price of $24.99 each.

Besides bandages and pain relievers, a staple of any medicine cabinet or home first aid kit is a reliable thermometer, especially these days.

You can stock up pretty well on basic health supplies at Aldi, from allergy nasal spray and Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen that the grocer sells year round, to limited-time specials such as pulse oximeters, face masks, Squatty Potties, and blood pressure monitors that rotate onto store shelves for just a short period.

Among the essentials that Aldi occasionally sells are several types of thermometers.

What We Know:

Welby Ear/Forehead or Noncontact Thermometer

The Welby Ear/Forehead Thermometer and the Welby Noncontact Thermometer (product code 802514 in 2021; the noncontact thermometer had the product code 829852 in 2024) each cost $24.99 in March of 2021 and in January of 2023. Aldi sold the non-contact thermometer for $19.99 in January of 2024.

This is not the cheapest price for noncontact or ear/forehead thermometers compared to other brands sold on Amazon, but it’s also not the most expensive either. With quite a few similar well-reviewed thermometers selling for $20 or less on Amazon, you might want to check out some other options before making a purchase.

These Welby thermometers are Aldi Finds (Special Buys), which means they’re only in stores for a short time. You can’t order them online, so once they sell out at your local store, they’re gone.

Aldi also sold these thermometers for the same price just a couple of months ago in January of 2021 (and it is unusual for an Aldi Find to return so quickly). Aldi also sold them for $19.49 in January of 2020 and $14.99 in January of 2019, so the price has increased over the years.

In addition, Aldi sold a basic budget-friendly digital thermometer for $4.99 in 2018 and for $3.99 in 2017, but since it’s been a few years since we’ve seen that model at Aldi, it seems the trend is toward ear/forehead and noncontact thermometers.

Features for the 2021 ear/forehead thermometer include:

  • Reads in seconds
  • Large digital display with illuminated background
  • For infants, children, and adults
  • A memory function that recalls the last 9 temperature readings
  • Visual and audio fever alarm
  • Includes batteries

Features for the 2024 noncontact thermometer include:

  • Large easy to read digital display with illuminated background
  • Reads in seconds
  • Memory function recalls the last 9 temperature readings
  • Gives results in seconds for infants, children, and adults
  • Features visual and audio fever alarm
  • Takes body and object temps
  • Offers contactless forehead temperature measurements

Previous models came with a three-year warranty serviced by Greater Concepts by Design, which is a business consulting firm in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, that also sells medical products. Because why not combine those two things? Aldi has not yet published information about whether the noncontact thermometer sold in 2024 comes with a warranty.

What We Don’t Know:

We haven’t been able to try any of these thermometers yet, so we don’t know how well they work. Our goal with open thread posts like this one is to offer a place for people to share their experiences about a product.

  1. I bought this thermometer and it only worked for a short time, not worth the $24.99. I am a big ALDI fan and have shopped weekly in the North Carolina, Kentucky, and Rochester stores but over that last few years, some of there items have turned up duds, this is one of them.

  2. I used this thermometer about 10 times in Dec 2021. It was accurate. Tried it today, jun 4 2022 and everyone has a temp of 100.3, put in fresh batteries. Same thing. Will take it back to Aldi. Not worth buying this sort of item from them again. A shame.
