Aldi Finds vs. Seasonal Products — What’s the Difference?

Any Aldi shopper will tell you that there are a few different categories of products in the store.

One group of products is the everyday stuff, the things that never change. The grocery industry, Aldi included, has a formal term for these — core range. While shoppers in the UK and Ireland use the term, Americans do not. For that reason, we tend to use a term we’ve heard used in the states: Regular Buys.

A second group of products is the stuff that rolls in and out of the store for a short time. In America, these things are called Aldi Finds, while in other parts of the world they are called Special Buys or Specialbuys. Each store gets one shipment, and once these products are gone, they’re gone.

But there is a third classification of Aldi products, things that aren’t there every day but aren’t there for just a short time, either. Aldi first called them Seasonal Items, then Seasonal Favorites … and at some point they became Seasonal Products. As the name suggests, these are products that are in stock for a season.

Aldi Finds and Seasonal Products do have one thing in common: they’re temporary. You can’t buy Aldi Finds any time, and you can’t buy Seasonal Products all the time, either. At some point, both of them run out of stock.

The biggest difference between Aldi Finds and Seasonal Items is how long they’re in stores, and whether they’re restocked. Aldi Finds are only stocked one time — stores don’t receive repeat shipments — and once they’re gone, they’re probably gone for several months to a year. Seasonal Products, on the other hand, do get repeat shipments, at least through a certain period of time. Certain Aldi barbecue sauces, for example, are stocked throughout the summer, while some meat products are only stocked during the winter holiday season.

The window of time to buy a Seasonal Product is usually much longer than an Aldi Find, but there is still a point at which store stock is cut off.

Despite the differences, we’ve seen the lines blur a little. On rare occasions, we’ve seen an Aldi Find turn into a Seasonal Product, particularly if the Aldi Find was successful. We’ve also watched a Seasonal Product transition back to an Aldi Find. (More common is a transition between Regular Buy and either a Seasonal Product or Aldi Find, as we’ve seen with pie crusts and shelled peanuts.) We’ve also seen some Aldi Finds become frequent enough that they almost have Seasonal Product vibes, such as with Fremont Fish Market Crab Cakes.

Still, one detail matters. With Aldi’s ever-rotating inventory, Aldi Finds and Seasonal Products are both important parts in a store that has less shelf space than many other grocers. It’s just a matter of how much time you have to stock up before they disappear … at least for a while.
