When the Halloween season rolls around each year, you want to be sure to head out to Aldi for all kinds of deals on decorations, seasonal candles, food, and even Halloween costumes.

You might not think of Aldi first when you think about stores that sell Halloween costumes, but every year for a while now, the discount grocery store has sold costume-style union suits for both children and adults in designs that include unicorns, dragons, sharks, and skeletons.

This year, Aldi also introduced some comical-looking giant plush masks in several designs, including a cat, dinosaur, shark, unicorn, and more. These masks don’t specifically go with all of the Aldi union suits mentioned above. The masks come in a greater number of designs than the union suits, and the only overlap is with unicorns and sharks. I bought a cat mask.

Bee Happy Giant Plush Mask

The Bee Happy Giant Plush Mask (Product Code: 701730) cost $12.99 at the time of publication. Bee Happy is not a separate company but rather is an Aldi house brand for toys and products for children, including magnetic building tiles, swings, pogo jumpers, activity tables, and giant plush animals. Similar large plush masks start at around $20 and go up to $40 to $50 on Amazon, which makes the Aldi masks the better deal.

This mask is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a limited time. Each store gets one shipment, and after that sells out, they’re gone unless Aldi decides to bring them back next year. Aldi does not offer online ordering for products that aren’t in stock at your local store.

Here’s more information about the masks, according to Aldi:

  • Choose a Unicorn, Dinosaur, Pumpkin, Panda, Black Cat, Shark, Bunny, or Dog
  • Dimensions: 18″ x 15″ x 14″
  • For ages 6+
  • Made in Nanjing, China

You can wear one of these masks on its own, or you can put together a whole costume using other components not purchased at Aldi. For instance, one of my kids wants to be a black cat for Halloween this year, so I bought the black cat mask, and she can wear black pants and shirt, and we’ll make a tail to complete the costume.

The first thing I noticed in the store was how big these masks are. The information in the weekly Aldi ad stated these are for ages 6 and older, so I wasn’t sure if they’d be child-sized. They fit kids and average-sized adults just fine, although the neck may gap a little more on kids. We don’t have any very large adults in our household, so if you’re bigger or taller, I’m not sure how well it would fit, but it’s spacious enough inside that I think there’s a good chance it would still fit.

The inside of the mask, with lots of black fuzzies. Notice the see-through mesh eyes.

All of the masks were stacked on top of each other and slightly flattened in the store, but they pop open pretty good when you put one on your head. They have a lot of fuzzy pieces stuck to the insides, and I recommend wiping or otherwise trying to remove some of the fuzzies before putting the mask on, or you may end up with some unpleasant fuzz in your mouth. I also found a few fuzz pieces stuck to my clothes after trying this on. I’m not sure if shedding will continue to be a problem after we’ve owned and used this for a while. I’ll update this post if shedding continues.

The mask on an older elementary kid.

Once you put one of these masks on, it’s pretty hilarious. My kid thought it was funny when I brought the black cat mask home. We took turns trying it on. The nose section for the cat juts out into the interior of the mask and pushes right up against my mouth, which isn’t the most comfortable feeling, but it does not interfere with breathing. The mask also seems to stay in place all right. It does make your neck disappear, which looks a little weird, as if this mask isn’t already funny looking.

The masks all feature see-through mesh eyes so you can see where you’re going when wearing one, and visibility is okay but not 100%. I’d still recommend being careful if you’re walking outside in the dark on Halloween with this, since your vision is somewhat compromised. Speaking of vision, if you wear eyeglasses, they should fit okay under this mask; mine did.

The mask on an adult.

I have a feeling this mask is going to be a hit on Halloween, and it might get some use as a dress-up toy during the rest of the year. It’s also a nice bonus that it fits people of all sizes from kids to adults, so we aren’t going to outgrow it and can use it year after year.

The Verdict:

The Bee Happy Giant Plush Mask comes in several designs, including a unicorn, dinosaur, pumpkin, panda, black cat, shark, bunny, and dog. They fit on both kids and adults and can be worn on their own, or you can put together a full costume using other components not purchased at Aldi. They do shed some fuzz pieces but fit all right and are mostly comfortable. These masks are pretty hilarious-looking and make a fun addition to any Halloween costume.
