EDITOR’S NOTE: Updated January of 2023 to add a link to our buffalo chicken strips review.
Aldi does not lack when it comes to breaded frozen chicken options. From nuggets and patties to tenders and fillets, the discount grocer sells a little of everything under its Kirkwood house brand. That is to say nothing of the less processed chicken cuts such as drumsticks, wings, thighs, breasts, whole birds, and even small Cornish hens the grocer also sells.
Aldi has developed a bit of a cult following around its breaded chicken products, with fans even referring to certain types of chicken according to the color of the bag it comes packaged in. In this post, we’ll take a look at a few of the most popular breaded chicken choices in the freezer section.
Kirkwood Breaded Chicken Breast Fillets
Cost: $5.99 for a 24-ounce bag
Thoughts: Also known as “red bag” chicken, this might be the specific chicken selection that started the whole chicken craze at Aldi. Some people swear that these fillets served atop Aldi brioche buns are a dead ringer for Chik-fil-A chicken sandwiches. We’ll let you be the judge of that.

Kirkwood Parmesan Herb Encrusted Chicken Tenders
Cost: $5.99 for a 28-ounce bag
Thoughts: Also known as “green bag” chicken, these underwent some tweaks recently and now have more breading and come in larger pieces. They’re different than before, but still good.

Kirkwood Honey Battered Chicken Tenders
Cost: $4.45 for a 25.5-ounce bag
Thoughts: This sometimes goes by the name of “yellow bag” chicken. These tender small pieces of chicken are coated in a soft breading and go well with honey mustard dip.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Chicken Fries
Cost: $5.19 for a 24-ounce bag
Thoughts: These are like chicken nuggets but in a skinny shape perfect for dipping in your favorite sauce. They also are great for tossing in the air fryer.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Honey BBQ Flavored Chicken Wings
Cost: $6.75 for a 28-ounce bag
Thoughts: These bone-in chicken wings are breaded and coated with a sweet and savory sauce. They heat easily in the oven and my family quickly polished these off. These wings are definitely something I’ll pick up again.

Kirkwood Buffalo Style Chicken Strips
Cost: $6.75 for a 28-ounce bag
Thoughts: Fans often calls this “orange bag” chicken. If you like spicy foods this is an option at Aldi.

Kirkwood Crispy Chicken Strips
Cost: $4.89 for a 25-ounce bag
Thoughts: These go by the name of “blue bag” chicken. They remind us of what you get when you order chicken fingers in a restaurant. These are generously sized and have plenty of crisp breading, and family members have been known to ask for these for birthday meals. Pair them with a salad and some barbecue sauce and you’ve got a nice meal.

Kirkwood Popcorn Chicken
Cost: $3.99 for a 25.5-oz. bag
Thoughts: This also comes in a yellow bag, but I think the honey battered chicken tenders might be the official “yellow bag” chicken. This chicken is fine on its own served with dipping sauce, but it also makes a good base for Chinese-American cuisine. We recommend drizzling one of the Aldi Asian-inspired sauces such as Teriyaki, Sweet and Sour, or General Tso’s over this chicken.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Nuggets
Cost: $3.49 for a 29-oz. bag
Thoughts: These are standard grocery store chicken nuggets, good for feeding hungry children at lunch time, but we won’t deny that grownups enjoy them, too.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Dino Nuggets
Cost: $6.99 for a 38-ounce box
Thoughts: For those of you who want something more fun than a plain chicken nugget, Aldi also sells dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets.

Kirkwood Fully Cooked Breaded Chicken Breast Patties
Cost: $3.59 for a 23.8-ounce bag
Thoughts: These are the more basic counterpart to the Aldi “red bag” chicken or Kirkwood Breaded Chicken Breast Fillets. These patties are more like what you’d find in a school cafeteria, but not in a bad way. If you like breaded chicken sandwiches, these are good comfort food.

Chicken Cordon Bleu
Cost: $0.99 for 5 ounces
Thoughts: These unique entrees are sold individually, so you can purchase the exact amount you need, whether you’re cooking for one or many. This breaded chicken is filled with gooey cheese and diced bits of ham, and kids and adults both love it in our house.

Awesome review but you didn’t review the buffalo chicken. I will save you the trouble-just the right amount of spice but SUPER SALTY. So salty that I couldn’t eat them Buffalo wings should not be salty! Have a great day!
We do mention the buffalo chicken. We don’t have a review of it, though, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I have noticed that the “blue bag” crispy chicken strips have changed recently. I LOVED the original “blue bag”, but hate the “red bag”… completely different flavor. The new “blue bag” tastes like the “red bag” now. The stock seems erratic at Aldis. Sometimes I am still able to get the original “blue bag” product. You can tell the new vs old product by the bag. The bag looks the same, but the older version “blue bag” is resealable. The newer version (Yuck) does not come in a resealable bag.
